What are dump trucks?

Probably one of the most common trucks seen around almost every construction project, the dump truck is truly the workhorse of the construction industry, carrying loads of sand, gravel, aggregate, asphalt, demolition material – you name it – in and out of work sites. Depending on the region or part of the world you're in, these trucks are also known as gravel trucks, tipper lorry or truck, tip-truck, and tip-trailer to name just a few.

The dump truck is essentially a semi-truck with an attached dump trailer, which is powered by hydraulic pistons to lift or tilt the trailer, angling it in most cases towards the rear of the truck in order to dump its contents, and also allowing the truck to drive forward as it unloads. The dump truck's internal engine powers the both truck itself and the hydraulic piston mechanism.

Types of dump trucks at Ritchie Bros.

The most commonly used dump trucks are designed and built to tackle the rough terrain of a construction site, but are also legal to drive on public roads and highways. There are also articulated and off-road dump trucks which are designed for more challenging terrain and stay for the most part on a project site and are not intended or allowed as over-the-road vehicles.

The most common dump trucks used in the aggregate and construction industries vary in axle configuration. One of the most basic decisions when looking to purchase a used dump truck for sale is determining what axle configurations you need as this will determine the payload capacity.

Light duty dump trucks

For businesses needing a versatile and cost-effective solution for smaller-scale projects, light-duty dump trucks like the Ford F550XL, Ram 5500, and Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD offer an excellent balance of performance and affordability. These trucks are ideal for tasks such as residential landscaping, light construction work, and municipal projects where maneuverability and efficiency are key.

With a GVWR tailored for lighter loads, these trucks provide the reliability and capability you need without the higher investment required for larger vehicles. Choosing a light-duty dump truck ensures you have the right tool for the job while maximizing your operational budget.

Single axle dump trucks

Single axle dump trucks feature heavy duty models like the Freightliner M2, Ford F750XL, Ford F650, and Peterbilt 330, and are well-suited for businesses that demand both power and versatility in medium-duty applications. With the capability to handle significant loads, these trucks are perfect for construction projects, road work, and larger landscaping jobs. The single axle configuration provides a robust solution for transporting materials like gravel, sand, and debris, all while maintaining the maneuverability needed for a variety of job sites. Investing in a single axle dump truck ensures that you can tackle demanding tasks with confidence and efficiency, making it a valuable addition to your fleet.

Tandem axle dump trucks

Tandem axle dump trucks , like the Kenworth T880, Mack Granite, and Peterbilt 567, are engineered for heavy-duty applications that demand higher load capacities and stability. With two axles working together to support and distribute the weight, these trucks offer a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) that often exceeds 50,000 lbs, making them ideal for hauling large volumes of heavy materials like asphalt, concrete, and aggregate.

The tandem axle configuration provides better traction and stability on challenging terrains, ensuring safe and efficient transport even in demanding conditions. For construction sites, road work, or any job that requires moving substantial loads over rough ground, a tandem axle dump truck delivers the power and reliability you need.

Tri-axle & quad axle dump trucks

When your operations call for maximum payload capacity and uncompromising durability, tri-axle dump trucks and quad-axle dump trucks like the Western Star 4700, Volvo VHD, and International HV are the go-to solutions. These trucks are built to tackle the heaviest loads, making them ideal for large-scale construction projects and road building. The additional axle in a tri-axle configuration provides extra stability and load distribution, ensuring that you can haul massive amounts of material safely and efficiently. If you're in the market for a dump truck that can handle the most challenging jobs while optimizing your hauling capabilities, a tri-axle dump truck is a powerful investment that delivers unmatched performance.
